Guides › Homeland layout: storage placement and hauler workers

Where should storage go in the Homeland?

Placing storage in the middle of or near each production area, such as crop fields, resource plots and crafting stations, cuts down on Aniimo hauling time.

Haulers move goods only when free of their main station, so every short trip counts.

Aniimo with the hauling ability carry stockpiled produce from facilities to storage boxes in the gaps between their main jobs. A long walk to one distant chest means fewer runs in those gaps. In practice that points to one storage unit per production area rather than a single central warehouse. Put the main unit in the middle of your crop fields so harvests travel the shortest distance. Set chests right beside resource plots and crafting stations so their output has a short route too.

The same thinking applies to facilities of one type. A single worker Aniimo cycles between several of them, such as two electric machines, when one runs out of supplies, so keeping those facilities close together and close to their storage keeps that worker's routes short as well.

Rearranging a layout you already built

You do not have to rebuild a production area to fix its storage. In edit mode you can select several placed furniture items together and move or store them all at once, so you can shift a cluster of facilities and its chest as one group.

Shorter hauling only helps if the workers are running. Homeland workers consume food to keep automation going, and production stalls when they lack what they need, however well the chests are placed.
