How to catch Sparkling and Umbral wild variants
Umbral Aniimo arrive with their stats already perfect. Everything else in the rare-variant hunt, you work for.
The short version
- Umbral and Radiant variants spawn naturally at a low rate across the open world, so no event is required to find one.
- Umbral Aniimo are guaranteed perfect base stats regardless of level, form, or the device you catch them with.
- A Sparkling Cube, also called a Twinkle Cube, has a 100% capture rate and turns whatever it catches into a Sparkling variant with perfect potential.
- An Aniimo can only be changed into an alternate or weather form if you have already caught that specific variant.
- Auto-releasing catches without reviewing them can discard special weather forms, and no later form change brings one back.
There are two different things going on when people talk about catching rare wild variants, and mixing them up wastes rare items. One is finding a variant that already exists in the world. The other is creating one at the moment of capture.
Umbral and Radiant variants sit in the first group. They spawn naturally, at a low rate, out in the open world. Sparkling variants sit in the second group, because a Sparkling Cube makes any wild Aniimo it catches into one.
The stats question cuts across both, and it is the part worth getting straight before you spend anything.
Where Umbral and Radiant actually come from
Both Umbral and Radiant Aniimo can spawn naturally at a low rate across the open world. There is no gate on them beyond the rate itself. Any area you are already playing in can produce one.
Alternative colour variations also show up naturally out in the world, and the game's rare variant forms include Prismana, Sparkling and Umbral. So "rare variant" is not one category with one hunting method. It is several, and they do not all behave the same way.
Aniimo stats: Umbral versus the Sparkling Cube
Umbral Aniimo are guaranteed to possess perfect base stats. That holds regardless of level, regardless of form, and regardless of which capture device you used. A wild Umbral you catch at a low level has the same perfect base stats as any other.
That last clause is the one that saves you items. If an Umbral is standing in front of you, no premium device is buying you better stats, because the stats are already settled. A Sparkling Cube would still do its own jobs on that catch, since it has a 100% capture rate and makes what it catches a Sparkling variant, but it is not the thing making the creature good.
The Sparkling Cube is a rare capture device, also called a Twinkle Cube. It guarantees the capture succeeds. It guarantees the result is a shiny glistening Sparkling variant, as premium Anipods do. And it guarantees perfect potential stats on what hatches. That is the whole of what it does, and it has its own page here, so the useful point in this context is the contrast. The Cube creates a perfect Sparkling on demand. An Umbral turns up perfect on its own and asks nothing of your inventory.

Umbral variant
- Spawns naturally at a low rate across the open world.
- Guaranteed perfect base stats regardless of level, form, or capture device used.
- Costs nothing but the time spent finding one.
Sparkling Cube
- A rare capture device, also called a Twinkle Cube.
- Guarantees a successful capture of the wild Aniimo.
- Makes whatever it catches a Sparkling (shiny) variant with perfect potential.
Look at what you caught before you release it
Auto-releasing catches without reviewing them can discard special weather forms. That sounds like a minor tidiness problem. It is not.
An Aniimo can only be changed into an alternate or weather form if that specific variant has already been caught. So the form you binned on auto-release is not a form you can apply to something else later. You did not lose a duplicate. You lost access to the form.
The rule that follows is dull and worth keeping: review catches, especially anything caught in unusual weather, before anything gets released.
What makes a second catch of the same species worth it
Collection goals in Aniimo run well past owning one of each species. The list includes better Potential, different traits, Sparkling versions, different regional or alternate forms, and Prismana forms.
So a species marked as caught is not a species you are finished with. It also feeds back into the form rule. Catching an alternate form is what makes that form available to switch to, which means those catches pay twice: once as a collection entry, once as an option you can apply later.

Where to start
Catch Umbrals with whatever device you have and keep them. Save the Sparkling Cube for a species you specifically want as a perfect Sparkling. And stop auto-releasing until you have actually looked at what came in.
