What is Star Essence used for?
The use of Star Essence is unsettled: it is described both as consumed to level up an Aniimo and as used for capability awakening, where it raises potential and is required to upgrade Awaken Potential beyond 10 points up to the 20 cap.

Both versions are shown because the disagreement is itself information — usually it means the mechanic changed between beta builds.
Higher potential lowers the total Astranite needed to max out an Aniimo's stat. Capability awakening uses items like Star Sand and Star Cryst Essence to boost this value, with Star Essence tied to progression once you try pushing Awaken Potential past 10 toward the 20 cap.
Outside of awakening, the resource also acts as a basic progression consumable. It is spent directly to level up an Aniimo, sharing space with items like Growth Buds that grant experience points.
Not settled: Whether Star Essence functions as an ordinary leveling consumable or as a dedicated capability awakening item for the 10 to 20 potential range is not settled in the game.
