Dark Element Combat: Demonic State, Ignitis and Curses
Dark plays as a setup element: strip a target's Dark Resistance, then feed the damage dealers. Here is what each piece of the kit actually does.
The short version
- Dark Soul is Ignitis's innate Dark-element attack, and defeating an enemy with it grants a time-limited free recast.
- Battle Lust boosts damage by 25%, lasts 20 seconds, and stacks up to two times.
- Three stacks of Drowsiness from Dreaple push a target into Nightmare, lowering its Dark Resistance for 20 seconds.
- Nightmare's 3 second lockout ends the moment the target takes damage. The resistance reduction does not.
- Blood Thirst raises Malphas Sire's damage by up to 48% as remaining HP drops, with a large heal on the way out.
Dark is built around one loop. You lower a target's Dark Resistance, then you hit it with Dark damage. Almost every Aniimo in this element serves one half of that or the other, and knowing which half tells you where it belongs in a team.
Ignitis and Malphas Sire do the hitting. Dreaple, Witchin and Fragrancier do the opening up. Two of them can also lean on the enemy in ways that have nothing to do with damage numbers, which is worth knowing before you slot a healer-shredder into a team that did not need one.
One thing runs through the whole element: the good windows are short. Twenty seconds, ten seconds, three seconds. Dark rewards you for having something ready when a window opens, not for reacting to it.
Ignitis turns kills into free casts

Dark Soul is Ignitis's innate combat skill and its Dark-element attack. The official skill description says only that it "transports itself to a target and attacks." In play, the landing is behind the target.
The part that changes how you use Ignitis is what happens on a kill. Defeat an enemy with Dark Soul and you get a free recast of the ability for a limited time. A group of weak enemies is therefore not a queue of cooldowns. It is one cooldown and then a chain, for as long as each cast finishes something off.
Kills pay you twice. Ignitis's trait is Battle Fervor, which grants a damage buff every time it defeats a target and stacks up to two times. The stack is Battle Lust: 25% more damage, running for 20 seconds, held two at a time. Since that is a straight damage buff, the tidy order is to clear something small, get your stacks up, and then spend the ultimate, Dimension Rupture, while they are still live. Twenty seconds goes quickly.

Dreaple strips Dark Resistance

Dreaple exists to make a target take more Dark damage, and it gets there through a status effect rather than a single debuff press. Each application lands a stack of Drowsiness.
Three stacks tip the target into Nightmare. That runs for 20 seconds, lowers the target's Dark Resistance for the duration, and stops it moving or casting skills for 3 seconds.
The catch is on the lockout. Taking damage ends that control effect. If the team piles in the instant Nightmare lands, you have traded the 3 seconds away for nothing you would not have got anyway. The resistance reduction is the half that survives contact, and it is the half your Dark damage dealers care about.
Witchin and Fragrancier keep the damage flowing

Witchin works through curse mechanics, and the payoff goes to somebody else: it restores EP for dark attackers. Its contribution shows up on a teammate's bar rather than in its own damage. Malice Burst is its other lever, cutting the healing enemies receive by 50% for 10 seconds, which is the tool you want against anything that outheals your output rather than outlasting it.
Fragrancier buffs in two directions. The Secret Fragrance mark makes dark-type basic attacks deal bonus damage to marked targets for a limited duration, so it rewards whoever is swinging most often rather than whoever hits hardest once. The Fragrance Bomb ultimate hands the whole team a Dark damage boost and inflicts Charm on every enemy caught in the area, so it is both a damage window and a crowd answer in one button.
Witchin
- Uses curse mechanics to restore EP for dark attackers.
- Malice Burst cuts healing received by enemies hit by 50% for 10 seconds.
Fragrancier
- Secret Fragrance mark makes dark basic attacks deal bonus damage to marked targets for a limited duration.
- Fragrance Bomb ultimate grants a teamwide Dark damage boost.
- Fragrance Bomb also inflicts Charm on all enemies in its area of effect.
Malphas Sire, Blood Thirst and Demonic State
Malphas Sire is the element's risk play. Its Blood Thirst passive increases damage by up to 48% as remaining HP drops, which means the full value only arrives when you are in genuine trouble.
What makes that sustainable is the recovery attached to it. Malphas Sire restores a substantial amount of HP on exiting low-health combat or Demonic State. The low bar is a state you pass through and get paid for, not one you have to sit in and survive.
Demonic State has a counter of its own. Use six skills while in it and held basic attacks come out empowered, dealing bonus damage. That rewards cycling through your kit rather than holding skills back, which sits neatly with a passive that wants you deep in a fight anyway.

Where to start
Build Dark teams around the resistance debuff first. Get Dreaple's Nightmare on the target, let Fragrancier and Witchin cover the buff and the EP, and give Ignitis or Malphas Sire the clean window to spend in. The element does not reward improvisation so much as having the next thing ready.
