Who's That Aniimo? and Ecological Investigation events
All three Season 1 photo challenge dates, the capture, team and twine steps a photo needs, and why Ecological Investigation wants catches instead of photos.
The short version
- Season 1 has three Who's That Aniimo? events: September 16 to 24, October 2 to 8, and October 16 to 22.
- A Who's That Aniimo? photo only counts if you have captured the target, put it on your team and twined into it, then taken the photo through the event interface.
- Photographing the wrong creature in Who's That Aniimo? is not wasted, because it gives you additional clues.
- Who's That Aniimo? rewards include Sparkling Crystals, Breezy Plains Dewdrop Crystals and a tumbler.
- The Idyll Ecological Investigation wants captures, not photos, and you only need three of its four designated species to complete it.
Two recurring events send you looking for specific Aniimo, and they look alike. One wants a photo. The other wants a catch. Mixing them up costs you time.
Who's That Aniimo? is the photo challenge. You work out which creature is the target, then prove it with a picture taken a particular way. Ecological Investigation is about capturing assigned species and finishing tasks for points and research progress.
Below are the Who's That Aniimo? dates for Season 1, the steps its photos require, what both events pay, and how the investigation's rules differ.
Who's That Aniimo? dates for Season 1
Season 1 contains three Who's That Aniimo? events. The first lasted 8 days, from September 16 through September 24. The second runs from October 2 through October 8. The third lasts 6 days, from October 16 through October 22.
The third run is shorter than the first, so don't leave it to the final weekend. The photo challenge also has more steps than its name suggests, which is the next section.
- First eventRuns September 16 to September 24. Lasts 8 days.
- Second eventRuns October 2 to October 8.
- Third eventRuns October 16 to October 22. Lasts 6 days.
What a Who's That Aniimo? photo actually requires
Spotting the right creature in the wild and pointing a camera at it is not enough. To complete the challenge you capture the target creature, place it on your team, twine into it, and then photograph it through the event interface. Every step is required.
In practice this means the event is a capture task with a photo at the end. If you don't own the target yet, catching it comes first.
Guessing wrong is not a dead end. Photographing the wrong creature gives you additional clues, so a miss narrows down what the real target is.
- CaptureCatch the target creature.
- Add to teamPlace the captured creature on your team.
- TwineTwine into the creature.
- PhotographTake the photo through the event interface.
Who's That Aniimo? rewards
Completing the event rewards Sparkling Crystals and Breezy Plains Dewdrop Crystals. It also awards a tumbler.
The limited-time run of the event awarded Glimmer among its rewards as well.
Ecological Investigation: catch, don't photograph
The Idyll Ecological Investigation looks like the photo challenge and works differently. It requires capturing the assigned Aniimo rather than photographing them. A camera does nothing for you here.
The event names four designated species, and you complete it by capturing three of them. You don't need the full set. Catching three of the four featured species earns a range of extra rewards.
Catching specific Aniimo awards investigation points, and completing the investigation's tasks awards research progress. Not every task is a catch: one requires using an ultimate ability, so expect at least one fight-style objective alongside the captures.
Timing matters. The first Idyll Ecological Investigation concluded 4 days earlier than the first Who's That Aniimo? event, so when the two overlap, the investigation is usually the one to finish first.

Where to start
If both events are live, work the Ecological Investigation first, since the first one ended four days ahead of the photo challenge. Catch three of the four featured species and clear the ultimate ability task. For Who's That Aniimo?, catch the target, put it on your team, twine into it and only then take the photo through the event interface. Wrong guesses still pay out in clues.
