Guides › The break bar: staggering enemies and why it matters

What damage bonus does Pawnie's Pursuit give?

Pawnie's Pursuit trait grants up to 30% bonus damage against enemies in the BREAK state or under crowd control.

The bonus does nothing until a target is broken or crowd-controlled, so Pawnie needs a partner to open the window. On a healthy enemy with its break shield up, Pawnie hits at its normal rate, and damage abilities deal very little before that shield goes. The trait is a payoff for work someone else on the team, or Pawnie itself, has already done.

That makes Pawnie a finisher rather than a breaker. Pair it with an Aniimo whose job is breaking: Bouldus is an Earth support that also works as a breaker, and Scorchhowl's big hit causes a large break while restoring energy. Turbo's Nimbus Burst, used after Shrouded in Mist, raises party break efficiency by 30%, which gets you to the window sooner. Holo Battle Interlink rewards exactly this mix of damage dealers and break-focused members.

The second 30% from Ironclad Armament

Pawnie's ultimate, Ironclad Armament, grants its own 30% extra damage against broken targets, lasting 15 seconds. The trait is always on; the ultimate is a timed buff. Fire the ultimate as a break lands so its 15 seconds overlap the stun rather than run out before it.

Both bonuses sit on top of the break window itself, where enemies already take greatly increased damage, given as 250% for bosses. Breaking an enemy stuns it for 6 seconds, so that is the stretch to spend Pawnie's damage in.

When not to lean on it

Crowd control counts as well as break, so Pawnie still gets the trait bonus against a stunned target that has not been broken. Dark Energy Surge, a dark ground smash, stuns immediately without needing Fire debuff stacks, which gives you a quick way in.

Some fights punish going all in. In the Magmarex phase the break bar should not be fully emptied, so a team built around break payoffs needs to hold back there. And if you are trying to catch rather than kill, a stunned Aniimo gives a significantly higher capture chance, so that window is often better spent throwing a pod than stacking Pawnie's damage.

Not settled: The trait's "up to 30%" has no stated scaling, and whether it stacks with Ironclad Armament's separate 30% against broken targets is not settled.
