The break bar: staggering enemies and why it matters
Breaking a boss sets up a 250% damage window and makes a wild Aniimo a guaranteed catch with basic Aniipods. Which Aniimo break fastest, and which fights punish it.
The short version
- Emptying an enemy's break bar stuns it, and the stun lasts until the meter regenerates. During that time a boss takes 250% damage, the largest single damage multiplier in the game.
- Breaking a wild Aniimo raises its capture rate to a guaranteed catch, even with basic Aniipods.
- Time your support buffs to land just before the break gauge empties, so your damage dealer's burst is fully buffed for the whole window.
- Rookie, Luminelle and Turbo make breaking faster, and Pawney is built to hit broken enemies hard: up to 30% bonus damage from its trait, plus extra damage from its ultimate.
- Do not empty the bar on reflex. In some fights, such as the Magmarex phase, you should not fully empty it at all.
Break is the second bar on an enemy. On a boss it sits beneath the health bar as a break shield. Wear it down and the enemy staggers, stops fighting back for a while and takes far more damage than usual.
That makes break the most important number in Aniimo's combat, and it isn't only for bosses. The same stagger that sets up a damage window also sets up a catch. This guide covers what break does, how to use the window it opens, which Aniimo are best at breaking, and the fights where emptying the bar is the wrong call.
What break is in Aniimo
Every enemy has a break gauge, sometimes called a stun bar. Hitting it depletes it, and when it runs out the enemy is staggered and vulnerable. The stun lasts until the break meter regenerates, so the window is set by the enemy's meter. It has no fixed timer.
While the window is open the enemy takes greatly increased damage. Against bosses that's 250%, which makes Break the largest single damage multiplier in the game. No buff or trait you can stack comes close on its own, so a fight goes much faster if most of your damage lands inside break windows.
This is the job of the Break role. Break-role Aniimo specialise in wearing down the shield under a boss's health bar and staggering it. How roles share energy and swap is covered in the main combat articles. For this guide you only need to know that one slot on your team should be pushing that shield down.

Breaking to catch
Break matters outside boss fights too. Breaking a wild Aniimo opens a vulnerability window that raises its capture rate, up to a guaranteed catch even with basic Aniipods. In general, stunned Aniimo are much easier to catch than ones that are still fighting.
In practice, don't throw at a creature that's still fighting. Break it, then throw during the stun. You save your better Aniipods for targets that really need them, and you stop wasting throws on a creature that was never likely to stay in.
Timing buffs around the break window
Since the window is where most of your damage happens, your buffs should cover it. Reapply support buffs just before the break gauge empties. Then the damage dealer starts the window with every buff active and its whole burst gets the 250%.
The usual mistake is buffing early, while the shield is still being worn down. The buff then runs out partway through the stagger, which is the moment it would have been worth the most. Watch the shield and save the buff for when it's nearly gone.
Best break Aniimo
Two kinds of Aniimo help here. Some empty the bar faster. Others hit much harder once it's empty.
Rookie's Bouncy Sling increases the break damage a target takes by 15% for 15 seconds, and it can bounce between nearby enemies up to 10 times. That makes it useful when several targets need breaking at once.
Luminelle supports Lightning teams. Lightning Surge increases break efficiency and boosts Lightning damage and break efficiency for the team. Its support skill Spotlight Moment raises the basic attack damage and BREAK efficiency of Lightning-type teammates (also called Electric-type) for 15 seconds. The exact values are not settled yet: the basic attack bonus is either 17% or 27%, and the BREAK efficiency bonus either 10% or 16%. Either way it points the same direction, but don't plan around the higher figures.
Turbo works in two steps. First activate Shrouded in Mist, then use Nimbus Burst. In that state Nimbus Burst increases party break efficiency by 30%.
Pawney is on the other side: it does the damage once the enemy is broken. Its trait grants up to 30% bonus damage against enemies that are broken or under crowd control, and its ultimate deals increased damage to broken enemies. Save Pawney's ultimate for the stagger rather than firing it as soon as it's ready.

When not to empty the bar
Breaking is usually right, but not always. In some fights you should not fully empty the break bar, and the Magmarex phase is the standard example. Bring the shield down by habit there and you'll lose the fight you're trying to win.
So learn each boss before you treat break as automatic. In most fights, empty the bar, buff just before it breaks and unload. In the few that punish it, chip the shield and stop short.
Where to start
Put one break specialist on every boss team, time your buffs to land just before the shield goes and keep your best burst for the stagger. Break wild Aniimo before you throw. Learn which fights, like the Magmarex phase, want the bar left partly full.
