Aniilog research tasks: rewards, uploads and Twine quests

Every species in the Aniilog has its own research tasks. Here is how camera mode, console uploads and Twine-only quests feed them, and what the collections pay out.

The short version

  1. Each Aniimo species has its own set of research tasks inside the Aniilog, the in-game creature encyclopedia.
  2. Press F to enter camera mode and record video of wild Aniimo for your research.
  3. Uploading data at a research console earns research points and adds to the Animology Department records.
  4. Some wild Aniimo offer quests you can only start while Twined into an Aniimo of that same species.
  5. Catching around 40% of a zone's species unlocks that zone's Bloom and Prismana flow, and finished collections pay out Vain Essence or Irisalis petals.

The Aniilog is the in-game creature encyclopedia, and it is not just a list of what you have caught. Each creature has its own research tasks inside it. Working through those tasks is how you fill out a species properly, and it runs all the time, not only during events.

The loop is simple once you see it. You gather data in the field, you take it back to a console, and you upload it. Some species also hide quests that only open up when you approach them in the right form. Finishing collections then pays out materials you will want later.

This page covers each step in the order you will meet it.

40%

Zone species caught to unlock Bloom

Catching around 40% of a zone's species unlocks that zone's Bloom and Prismana flow, so it is worth aiming for before you move on.

Recording wild Aniimo in camera mode

Research starts in the open world. Press F to switch into camera mode, which lets you record video of wild Aniimo.

Because every species carries its own research tasks, it pays to check a creature's Aniilog entry before you go looking for it. That tells you what the game actually wants from that species, so you are not recording at random and hoping something counts.

Uploading research data at outposts

Data you collect does nothing while it sits with you. You have to upload it at a console. Uploading research data at an outpost console enriches the Animology Department records, and uploading exploration data at the research console earns you research points.

The practical habit is to treat outposts as checkpoints. When you pass one with data in hand, upload it, then head back out. Research points come from the upload itself, so a long trip without visiting a console earns you nothing until you finally stop at one.

At the far end of all this sit Polaris badges. They go to individuals who achieve major research breakthroughs, so they mark serious progress rather than a routine upload.

Twine-only species quests

Some research is locked behind your form, not your camera. Certain wild Aniimo in the open world offer quests that can only be started by Twining into an Aniimo of that same species. Walk up as yourself and the quest simply is not available. Twine into a matching species and it opens.

If you are hunting a quest from a specific creature, this is the rule to remember: you need that creature's own species to Twine into first. So catching one is usually the step before its quest, not the reward after it.

Twining has another side effect worth knowing. While Twined, you can attract a small number of wild Aniimo of the same species to follow you. Twining as a whole, and what it does for burning vines and reaching hidden nests, has its own guide on this site.

Collection rewards: Vain Essence, Irisalis petals and zone unlocks

Collections are where the research pays off in materials. Completing the Breezy Plains collection tiers in the Aniilog rewards Vain Essence, and the bronze tier gives one. Topic collections work differently: completing one of these, such as collecting Prismana Aniimo, awards Irisalis petals.

The biggest unlock is tied to catching rather than recording. Catch enough of a zone's species, around 40%, and that zone's Bloom and Prismana flow opens up. That makes broad catching in a new zone worth doing early, since it unlocks more of the zone instead of just filling entries.

Where to start

Check a species' Aniilog tasks, record it with F, and upload at the next console you pass. Twine into a matching species to open its quest. Catch widely in each new zone until its Bloom and Prismana flow opens up.
