Aniimo Elemental Terrain and Field Abilities

Sherro hits harder standing in water, and some areas stay shut until you bring the right element. Here is which Aniimo make terrain and why that matters.

The short version

  1. Sherro deals increased damage while standing in water terrain or absorbing water through Tidal Heart, and its Hydro Roll lays a puddle so it can make its own.
  2. Sherro's ultimate, Torrent Blade, briefly extends its basic attack range after the slash when you use it near water terrain.
  3. Popota can generate water terrain, and Erlath generates water interactions while restoring EP, so both can set up the ground a water fighter wants.
  4. Some field abilities, such as water abilities used on environmental water puzzles, are required to reach specific overworld areas.
  5. Fire field abilities burn vines, wooden barriers and trees and melt ice; Flameruff and Scorchhowl both learn Fire Bolt, which ignites flammable objects at range.

Elements in Aniimo do two jobs. In a fight, some abilities change the ground itself, leaving water terrain behind that other skills feed on. Out in the world, field abilities let you interact with obstacles and puzzles that would otherwise block your way.

The water side of this is where terrain matters most, and Sherro is the clearest example: a Water-element Aniimo whose whole kit gets better when it is standing in the wet. The fire side is mostly about clearing the path. Both are worth understanding early, because the right element in your team decides where you can go as well as how hard you hit.

How Sherro turns water terrain into damage

Sherro is a Water-element Aniimo built around the ground it stands on. It deals increased damage when standing in water terrain, or when absorbing water via Tidal Heart. That gives you two routes to the same bonus, which means you are not stuck waiting for a map with a lake in it.

It can also make its own. Sherro's Hydro Roll ability creates a puddle on the ground, so the setup and the payoff live in the same kit. Roll, then fight from the puddle.

The ultimate rewards the same habit. Torrent Blade, used near water terrain, briefly increases Sherro's basic attack range after the slash. Used away from water it loses that extra reach, so the order you do things in matters: get the terrain down first, then spend the ultimate.

Other Aniimo that put water on the field

Sherro does not have to do the work alone. Popota can generate water terrain, which makes it a natural partner for anything that benefits from standing in it. Erlath generates water interactions while restoring EP, so it sets up water effects as a side benefit of something you would be doing anyway.

Water also works as a debuff, not only as ground. Pan Panta is a Water-element Breaker Aniimo. Its base form uses Water Cannon, while Prismana Panpanta's version, Water Cannonade, applies five stacks of Water Debuff to the targets it hits. If you are building around water, that is the form to look for.

Field abilities that open the map

Outside combat, certain Aniimo field abilities let you interact with and solve environmental puzzles. Water abilities used on environmental water puzzles are the example to remember, and these abilities are not optional extras: they are required to reach specific overworld areas. If a path seems closed, the answer is often an element you have not brought.

Fire is the other element you will lean on constantly, and it has its own guide on this site: How to burn vines and reach hidden nests in Aniimo. In short, Fire-type Aniimo have a field ability that burns obstacles such as wooden barriers and trees and activates fire-based puzzles, and many world puzzles require it. Some open-world chests are sealed by thorny vines that must be burned away, and certain obstacles such as ice must be melted with a fire Aniimo's abilities. Flameruff and Scorchhowl both learn Fire Bolt, a ranged fireball skill that ignites flammable objects and is commonly used to reach otherwise inaccessible chests.

Covering the elements in your team

The early quests double as a tutorial covering movement, catching, twining with Aniimo, combat and elemental counters. Elemental counters are the part to hold on to, because the same spread of elements that wins fights is the one that gets you through the world.

Water is easy to start with. Skippy serves as a Water-type starter, and Wave Stones are the progression stones used to evolve Water Aniimo, so you will be collecting them if you keep water in the team.

For the rest of the spread, a few roles are clear. Turbo, in its standard form, is a Wind-element Aniimo. Flutternym is a ranged Wind-type support that serves as a healer. Irisal is a Grass-element Aniimo that fills the damage dealer role. Geodeback is an earth-focused gamma evolution of Pebbling, found early in Crystal Cave, which makes earth one of the first elements you can add without going far.

Where to start

If you use water, pair Sherro with something that makes terrain, such as Popota or Erlath. Put the ground down before you use Torrent Blade. Keep a fire Aniimo in the team for vines, ice and barriers. When a route won't open, check which element you're missing before assuming the area is locked.
