Dealing damage in Aniimo: breaks, elements, crit and burst

Break is the biggest multiplier in Aniimo, worth 250% damage on bosses. Here is how elements, base crit, burst swaps and skill effects stack on top of it.

The short version

  1. Break comes first: damage abilities deal very little before an enemy's break shield goes, and a broken boss takes 250% damage until its bar refills.
  2. Elements have offensive and defensive advantages that significantly affect combat, though the full element roster is not settled.
  3. Base crit rate is 10%, so crit is a bonus on top of your damage rather than something to build around.
  4. Burst carriers like Sherro do most of their damage with the ultimate and are swapped out straight after, and entry effects like Dazmand's Spotlight Moment reward that swapping.
  5. Flutternym heals the active Aniimo from reserve whenever teammates use skills or Ultimates, without ever being deployed.

Aniimo is built mainly around player versus environment content, which means most of your fights are about killing enemies efficiently, not outplaying another person. Damage in those fights does not come from one stat. It comes from timing your hits into a break, hitting with the right element, and swapping Aniimo so their strongest skills land at the right moment.

This guide goes through those sources in order of how much they matter: break first, then elements, then crit and the skill effects that push output higher, then the burst swap pattern, and finally the effects that keep your active Aniimo standing long enough to use all of it.

What break is in Aniimo, and why it comes first

Enemies carry a break gauge, also called a stun bar. Deplete it and the enemy is staggered and vulnerable. That has its own article on this site, so here is only what matters for damage.

Before the break shield is gone, damage abilities deal very little. Once it breaks, the enemy is stunned and takes greatly increased damage until the bar refills. For bosses that figure is 250%, which makes Break the largest single damage multiplier in the game. The practical rule follows directly: work the bar down first, and save your heaviest hits for the window.

Some enemies hand you a broken state through their own mechanics. After you break free from a Balidol's grab, the beetle is left broken and is easy to kill.

Break is the largest single damage multiplier in the game, so emptying the break bar comes before spending damage skills.

Aniimo elements and the advantage chart

Every Aniimo has an elemental type, and elements counteract each other through an advantage chart. The advantages are both offensive and defensive: the right matchup changes what you deal and what you resist, and the effect on combat performance is significant.

The full list of Aniimo elements is not settled. Fire, Water, Ice, Wind, Grass, Dark and Electric (also given as Lightning) are fixed points. Where it shifts is the rest: a Light element or a Holy one, and Earth, Rock, or both. That leaves the total at nine or ten. Plan teams around the fixed elements, since those are the ones that hold in every version of the roster.

Crit and the skill effects that raise output

Base crit rate is 10%. That is low enough that crit is a bonus you collect, not a plan. The bigger gains come from skills that change how much you can do, or how hard each hit lands.

Some of those effects are about resources. Under Multicast, each instance of skill damage grants one point of casting energy, so skills that hit several times feed themselves. Dazmand's Spotlight Moment makes the first skill it uses within 5 seconds of entering the field cost no EP.

Others are conditional amplifiers. Sherro depends on water in the environment: interacting with water grants a 15% damage amplification for 20 seconds. The catch is that its damage is weak without multiple puddles, so Sherro is strong in the right arena and underwhelming in a dry one.

Not every useful skill is about single target numbers. Black Hole is an area of effect skill that works as crowd control against mobs, which keeps a crowd together while you work through it.

10%

Base crit rate

With only a 10% base crit rate, crit is a small baseline unless other effects raise it.

Burst swaps: bring them in, fire the ultimate, swap out

Sherro is the clearest example of a burst damage dealer. He does most of his damage with his ultimate and is swapped out after bursting. You are not meant to keep him on the field; you are meant to bring him in, land the big hit, and move on.

That pattern pairs well with effects that reward entering the field, like Spotlight Moment's free first skill. It also pairs well with break: an ultimate that does most of a character's damage belongs inside the window where the target takes greatly increased damage.

The same switching works in Holo-Battle Simulation, where you can switch to team members and play them with their full kit, ultimates included.

Sherro is a burst damage dealer. He does most of his damage with his ultimate and is swapped out after bursting.

Keeping the active Aniimo alive

Damage only counts while your active Aniimo is standing. Aniimo with the Heal role focus on restoring HP to the other members of your squad.

Flutternym does it without taking a turn on the field. While in reserve it appears as a phantom and restores 0.5% of maximum HP to the active Aniimo whenever teammates use skills or Ultimates. It never needs to be deployed, and a team that casts often gets more out of it.

In Holo-Battle Interlink there is a small safety net as well: players who die can revive once. Once that is spent, you are back to relying on your healing.

Where to start

Break the bar before you spend anything big, since a broken boss takes 250% damage. Pick elements that suit the matchup. Swap burst carriers like Sherro in for the ultimate and straight out again, and keep Flutternym in reserve so every skill your team casts also heals.
