How stagger damage and ultimate combos work
Emptying an enemy's gray break bar opens a short window where your heaviest attacks land for far more. Everything else is setup for it.
The short version
- The gray bar beneath an enemy's red health bar is the break gauge. Empty it and the enemy is staggered, with lowered defenses and bonus damage taken.
- Bosses take 250% damage while their break bar is depleted.
- Grapple first. It pulls the enemy in and puts it in the Controlled state, and controlled enemies are easier to break with skills.
- Break-role Aniimo such as Magmarex exist to strip shields and gauges so someone else can hit the opening.
- Hold charged ultimates until the bar is down. Breaking the gauge is what creates the opening for them.
- Luminelle's ultimate, Self-Destruction, leaves an electric field that increases Lightning damage dealt inside it.
Aniimo break, in one sentence: every enemy carries a gray bar under its red health bar, and emptying it opens a window where your biggest attacks land for far more than they normally would.
The rest is timing. Who brings the bar down, what you have charged when it drops, and where you are standing when it does.
The window you are actually fighting for
That gray bar is the break gauge, sometimes called the stun bar. Deplete it and the enemy enters a staggered state that lowers its defenses and lets you deal bonus damage. Enemies take significantly increased damage while broken. On bosses the figure is 250% damage once the break bar is empty.
That is why break is not an optional side system. A boss fight has two modes: the one where you are chipping, and the one where the bar is down. Damage you spend outside the window is damage spent at the worst possible rate.

Damage bosses take while broken
Grapple first, break second
Break-role Aniimo specialize in depleting enemy break gauges and stripping shields to stun and stagger targets. Their job is disrupting guard and poise so someone else can hit the opening. Magmarex is one of them.
The faster route is to control the target first. Grappling pulls an enemy toward you and puts it into the Controlled state, and enemies in a controlled state are easier to break with skills. So the order is grapple, then dump your break skills into a target that is already held. Doing it the other way round means fighting the gauge at full price.
- ControlledGrappling pulls the enemy toward you and puts it into the Controlled state.
- Easier to breakEnemies in a controlled state are easier to break with skills.
- StaggeredDepleting the break meter inflicts a staggered state that lowers defenses and allows bonus damage.
- Ultimate openingBreaking the gauge creates the opening to land ultimate abilities for heavy damage.
Do not spend the ultimate early
Characters and Aniimo both charge ultimate abilities during combat. Breaking an enemy's gauge creates the opening to land them for heavy damage, which means a charged ultimate is not something to fire the moment it comes up. It is something to hold until the gray bar is empty.
This matters most for kits that build toward a single payoff. Grizbo's skills accumulate Rage and then deal heavy damage. A burst like that wants a staggered target rather than a healthy one, so plan the Rage spend and the break around each other instead of letting them happen separately.
Stacking a field on top of the window
Some ultimates multiply the window rather than just filling it. Luminelle's ultimate, Self-Destruction, creates an electric field that increases Lightning damage dealt inside it. Drop it where the fight already is, and Lightning damage inside that area is working on top of the broken enemy's lowered defenses.
That is the shape of a good team: one Aniimo to control and break, one to open the field, one to unload into it. The window is short and shared, so decide before the fight who is spending what in it.

Where to start
Grapple to control, break with a break-role Aniimo, then unload. Ultimates are window spenders, not cooldown dumps.
