Thornblade guide: Sword Dance, Thorny Defense and forms
Every skill Thornblade uses adds a Sword Dance stack to its basic attacks. Here is how that loop works, what Thorny Defense's 30% Critical Rate needs, and where Prismana spawns.
The short version
- Each skill Thornblade uses grants one Sword Dance stack, and those stacks empower its basic attacks, so its damage comes from alternating skills and basics.
- Thorny Defense is part of the standard kit: a stance that cuts damage taken by 20% and counterattacks anyone who hits it.
- Getting struck at the exact moment Thorny Defense activates raises Thornblade's Critical Rate by 30% for 15 seconds.
- Thornblade's element is not settled: it appears as Grass alone with Prismana adding Water, and also as Grass and Water. The Thunderstorm form is Grass and Electric.
- Prismana Thornblade spawns in the Sea of Flowers region, and the line starts with Budsquire, which evolves into Thornblade.
Thornblade (No. 034) is the Aniimo you build a Grass team around when you want something to die quickly. It is a high-damage physical attacker with a base attack stat of 121, and it serves as the main DPS of a Grass team.
What makes it interesting is that its damage is not just a big number on a skill. It comes from a loop: skills feed its basic attacks, and its counter skill rewards you for timing a hit you were going to take anyway. This guide covers how Sword Dance stacks, how Thorny Defense works, what type Thornblade actually is, and where Prismana Thornblade spawns.

How Sword Dance stacks

Every skill Thornblade uses grants one Sword Dance stack. Those stacks empower its basic attacks. That is the whole engine, and it tells you how to play it.
The practical upshot is that Thornblade does not want you to spam basics or sit on skills. You use a skill, you bank a stack, and your basic attacks hit harder for it. A Thornblade that only swings is leaving its own damage bonus unused. A Thornblade that only casts never cashes the stacks in.
Because it is a physical damage dealer with a base attack of 121, the basics it empowers are already its strongest tool. Sword Dance is what turns a solid attacker into the DPS slot of a Grass team.
Thorny Defense and the counter window
Thorny Defense is Thornblade's counter skill, and it is part of the standard kit. You do not need the Prismana form to use it.
Activating it puts Thornblade into a defensive stance. While in that stance it takes 20% less damage and counterattacks enemies who strike it. That alone makes it useful when something is about to land on you.
The real payoff is the timing. If Thornblade is attacked at the moment the skill activates, its Critical Rate rises by 30% for 15 seconds. That is a long window for a DPS Aniimo, and it stacks naturally with the Sword Dance loop: Thorny Defense is a skill, so using it also feeds a Sword Dance stack into your next basics. Read the enemy's attack, pop the stance as it lands, then spend the next 15 seconds hitting hard.
The thorns from Thorny Blessing work on a limiter. They can trigger at most once every 0.5 seconds, so a flurry of fast hits will not set them off on every single blow.

Typing, and why it is not settled
Thornblade is Grass at its core, but its full element is not settled. In one version, the standard Basic form is Grass alone and the Prismana form, Prismana Thornblade, adds Water. In the other, Thornblade is Grass and Water outright. Until that is fixed, treat Grass as the certain part and plan around Water as a possibility rather than a given.
Thornblade has four forms: Basic, Prismana, Towerwood and Thunderstorm. The forms themselves have their own page on this site, so the short version here is the one that matters for typing: the Thunderstorm form is Grass and Electric, and it carries the lightning combat skill Lightning Impact. If you want Electric coverage on your Grass DPS, that is the form that gives it to you.
Where Prismana Thornblade spawns, and the Budsquire line

Prismana Thornblade spawns in the Sea of Flowers region. If you are hunting the Prismana form specifically, that is where to look.
The line starts lower down. Budsquire evolves into Thornblade, so if you already have a Budsquire you are one evolution away from your Grass team's main damage dealer.
Where to start
Play Thornblade as a rhythm, not a rotation of big hits. Use skills to build Sword Dance stacks, spend them on basic attacks, and save Thorny Defense for the moment an enemy swings so you collect the 30% Critical Rate for 15 seconds. Pick the Thunderstorm form if you want Electric typing and Lightning Impact. If you want the Prismana form, head to the Sea of Flowers, or start from a Budsquire.
