Egg Heist combat: team strategy and death penalties
In Aniimo's Egg Heist, whoever carries the egg can't fight. Here's how to escort them and which Aniimo to bring for range, healing, revives and EP.
The short version
- Whoever carries the central egg in Egg Heist turns into it and loses all combat abilities, so the rest of the team has to escort them to extraction.
- Pressing C untwines the carrier from egg form and sets the egg down temporarily without forfeiting it, so they can pick it back up later.
- You directly control only the Aniimo in your first team slot. Slots two to four come out just to use their core or support skill.
- Useful Egg Heist picks: Solaris for ranged damage, Glacy as a healer, Flutternym because its circle heal keeps working while you revive teammates, Somniwing as an EP battery, and Pawney.
- Opposing players can defeat your Aniimo, and opening a chest roots you in place for a few seconds, so don't open one while you're exposed.
Egg Heist (also called Diamond Egg Heist, or Operation: Egg Heist) is the mode where you fight other players to extract with special eggs. This guide doesn't cover the whole mode. It covers the fighting: what happens to whoever grabs the egg, how your team works in combat, and which Aniimo fit the job.
Most of a raid comes down to one fact. When a teammate picks up the central giant egg, they stop being a fighter, and everyone else becomes their escort.
The egg carrier cannot fight
The player who digs out the central egg twines with it and turns into the egg, then travels inside it on the way to extraction. While twined, combat is disabled completely. No skills and no attacks.
What the carrier gets instead is a separate movement set. The egg can roll quickly, dash or sprint, and jump. Even so, moving as an egg is slower and more awkward than moving as an Aniimo, so the carrier can't outrun a fight and can't win one either.
That's why the team has to escort and protect the carrier until evacuation. Everyone else's job is to keep opponents off the egg.
Setting the egg down with C
The carrier isn't stuck as an egg. Pressing C untwines you from egg form and sets the egg down temporarily. You don't forfeit it, so you can come back for it later.
In practice that gives your team a choice. When a fight lands on the escort, the carrier can put the egg down instead of rolling around unable to do anything. Just remember the egg is now on the ground, and you still have to go back and pick it up.
How your team fights in Egg Heist
You directly control only one Aniimo: the active one in your first team slot. It can use both its regular skills and its ultimate. The Aniimo in slots two to four come out only to use their core or support skill, and then control goes back to your main Aniimo.
So your first slot does the sustained fighting, and the other three are skills you call in. Build with that in mind. A team that's good for catching in one region won't always suit Egg Heist, and rosters may need changing for this mode.
First team slot
- The only Aniimo you control directly
- Uses its regular skills
- Uses its ultimate
Second to fourth slots
- Come out only to use a core or support skill
- Control then returns to the main Aniimo
Aniimo worth bringing
Solaris is a ranged damage dealer and fits the ranged damage role in Egg Heist. That's useful when you want to hit opponents before they get close to your carrier.
For healing, Glacy is a Support-role Aniimo that heals the team and can fill the healer slot. Flutternym is especially good here because its circle heal keeps restoring HP while players revive teammates, so reviving someone doesn't leave the rest of you unhealed.
Somniwing works as an energy battery. It's an EP regeneration support for teams that burn through EP, and Egg Heist teams count. Pawney is also effective in Egg Heist, as well as in PvP and Alpha boss dungeon battles.
Threats on the route out
The other team is the obvious threat. Opposing players can defeat your Aniimo during a match, and they can do it to your escort while your carrier can't fight back.
The map adds its own. Eggs in the Sanctum or at higher difficulties are guarded by hostile Umbra Aniimo or bosses, so you may have to fight just to reach one.
Chests are a trap of their own. Opening an Egg Heist chest takes a few seconds to load its contents, and you stand still the whole time. Open them when nobody is nearby, not in the middle of an escort. If you need to get your bearings, shrine locations can be shown on the map, where Egg Heist marks them with a pillar icon.
Where to start
Choose your carrier before you dig, because once they're in the egg they can't fight. Use C if they need to drop it. Put your main fighter in slot one and use the other three slots for healing, revives and EP. Don't open chests while anyone's in range of you.
