How Nurture and Cultivation Work

Nurture unlocks at a region's Branch, costs one Essence of Vanity per attempt, and pays out in crowds, better Potential Values and regional energy.

3 min read5 sectionschecked updated

The short version

  1. Gather Lumin Amber and upgrade a region's Branch to unlock Nurture.
  2. Every attempt, whether you call it nurturing or cultivating, consumes one Essence of Vanity.
  3. One attempt triggers a Group Appearance: a large number of Aniimo spawn at once in the area.
  4. Spawns from Nurture have elevated odds for higher Potential Values and an increased chance of being Sparkling.
  5. Nurturing at a Bloom builds a region's Prismatic Energy, which runs in tiers from empty up to very high and full or guaranteed.
  6. Cultivation was renamed Nurture in Community Beta 3, so older guides describe the same system under the old name.

Nurture is the system that makes a region come to you. You unlock it, you spend one consumable, and the area around you fills with Aniimo at once. It is the closest thing the game has to deciding when and where you want to catch something.

It is also the system with two names in circulation, two names for its fuel, and a second job you will care about more the longer you play: building a region's Prismatic Energy up toward Prismana.

Here is what it costs, what it does, and what you get out of it.

Unlocking Nurture at the Branch

Nurture is not available from the start. You unlock it by gathering Lumin Amber and upgrading a region's Branch.

Upgrading a Branch is worth doing for more than this one mechanic. It unlocks a set of systems, Nurture among them, and Nurture itself raises your chance of encountering Sparkling Aniimo, the game's shiny variant. So the Branch upgrade is the gate on both the system and its main benefit.

Because the unlock sits at a region's Branch, the work is regional. Amber gathered and spent in one place buys you the ability there.

What one attempt costs and what it gives you

Each attempt consumes one Essence of Vanity. That is the whole price, and it applies to every nurture or cultivation attempt you make.

What you get back is a Group Appearance. A large number of Aniimo spawn at once in the area, which is the point: instead of walking a region hoping for an encounter, you pay one item and the encounters arrive together.

The quality of those spawns is better than normal, in two ways. Aniimo spawned this way have elevated odds for higher Potential Values, which matters if you are hunting for something you intend to keep and raise rather than something you intend to log. They also have an increased chance of being Sparkling. The size of that Sparkling boost is not published, so treat it as a real edge rather than a rate you can plan around. Spawns and Sparkling odds are covered in depth in the Prismana and Sparkling Aniimo guide.

Essence of Vanity per attempt

Every cultivation or nurture attempt consumes one Essence of Vanity, also called Vein Essence, so your stock of it sets how many attempts you can make.

Building Prismatic Energy toward Prismana

Nurture has a second effect that accumulates. Nurturing cultivates an area and builds up its Prismatic Energy, and nurturing at a Bloom builds the regional energy that spawns Prismana Aniimo.

That energy is a tiered track, not a switch. It progresses from empty up through very high and on to full or guaranteed status. So a single attempt is rarely the whole job; you are pushing a region's meter along, and the top of the track is where the payoff stops being a chance and starts being a certainty.

At sufficient energy, Prismana Aniimo appear for capture, and the same energy can bring on Prismana Flow, the only weather state players are currently able to trigger. Prismana Flow has its own guide on this site. One thing is worth saying plainly here: whether Nurture is the primary way to obtain Prismana Aniimo or one route among several is not settled. Either way it works, so build the energy.

Prismatic and regional energy tiers
  1. EmptyWhere a region's energy starts before you nurture it.
  2. Very highThe upper tier reached as repeated nurturing builds the area's Prismatic Energy.
  3. Full or guaranteedThe top status, at which Prismana Aniimo appear for capture.

Old names you will still run into

The system was called Cultivation before it was renamed to Nurture in Community Beta 3. Guides and conversations written earlier use the old word, and some still mix the two. Nurture offerings and cultivation are the same thing.

Its fuel has the same problem. Essence of Vanity is also referred to as Vein Essence. One item, two names, one consumed per attempt.

None of this changes what you do. It just means that when you read "cultivate the area" and "nurture at the Bloom" in two different places, nobody is describing two systems.

Where to start

Upgrade a Branch early, keep Essence of Vanity in stock, and spend it where you want the crowd. The Potential and Sparkling odds are the immediate reward; the Prismatic Energy you build along the way is the one that ends in Prismana.
