What you lose when you die in Egg Heist

Dying, fainting or failing to extract strips your backpack and carried loot. Here is what the safe pocket and your first three protected matches still save.

The short version

  1. Dying, fainting or failing to extract from an Egg Heist run costs you your carried items, your equipped backpack and any gear that is not protected.
  2. Only what sits in the safe pocket survives a death; all unslotted loot and every item outside the safe pocket is lost.
  3. Beginner protection is active at lower ranks and keeps your backpack and loot safe on death for your first three Egg Heist matches.
  4. The Egg Boat Safe talent unlocks the protected safe pocket, which is where your eggs should go.
  5. Protective units add attribute boosts and damage reduction, while attack amplifiers raise your damage and give damage amplification level one against beginner targets.

Aniimo's Egg Heist is a run you have to get out of. Walk out with your haul and it is yours. Go down, faint, or fail to extract, and most of what you were carrying stays behind.

This page covers the cost of a bad run and the three things that change it: beginner protection, the safe pocket, and the units and amplifiers you bring in. How Egg Heist fits into the early game is covered in our early journey guide; here the subject is what you lose and how to lose less.

What a failed Egg Heist run takes from you

Dying and failing to extract are treated the same way. Both cost you your carried inventory and any gear that is not protected. Fainting counts as well. If you faint during a run, you lose the items you were carrying, your backpack, and your equipped gear.

Spelled out item by item, a death takes all of your unslotted loot, your equipped backpack, and everything in your inventory that is not in the safe pocket. That last point is the one that matters. The game does not sort your haul by value when you go down. It sorts it by where you put it.

So the backpack is not a safe place. It is the thing you lose. Treat everything in it as at risk until you are out.

Beginner protection and the safe pocket

Two things keep loot in your hands when a run goes wrong.

The first is beginner protection. It is active at lower ranks, and for your first three Egg Heist matches it stops you losing your backpack and loot when you die. Use those matches to learn the maps and the extraction, because mistakes there are cheap in a way they will not be again.

The second is permanent. The Egg Boat Safe talent unlocks a protected safe pocket for stashing eggs. Since anything outside the safe pocket is lost on death, this is the one slot that changes the stakes of every run after beginner protection ends. If you come across an egg worth keeping, the safe pocket is where it belongs, not the backpack.

Protected Egg Heist matches

Beginner protection stops you losing backpacks and loot on death for your first three Egg Heist matches, so those runs are the cheapest time to learn.

Protective units and attack amplifiers

The other way to lose less is to die less. Protective units grant attribute boosts and damage reduction, which makes you harder to put down during an Egg Heist. If you keep fainting with a full bag, this is the side of your loadout to look at first.

Attack amplifiers push the other direction. They increase the damage you deal in Egg Heists and grant damage amplification level one against beginner targets. That is worth knowing from both ends: it helps you when you bring one, and it means a newer player in the same match is the one taking that extra damage.

Neither changes what you lose on death. They change how likely the death is, which on a run where the backpack is on the line amounts to the same thing.

Where to start

Spend your first three matches learning while beginner protection covers you. Get the Egg Boat Safe talent and put eggs in the safe pocket, because the backpack goes when you do. Bring protective units if you keep fainting, and an attack amplifier if you want fights to end faster.
