The short version

  1. Every Egg Heist map has two locked rooms, and both need a blue key.
  2. Silver keys open Intermediate and Hard locked doors. Nightmare doors need gold (Gilded) keys.
  3. In a Chaos run almost no eggs lie in the open, so the locked key rooms are where nearly all of them are.
  4. A Gilded Key's price is not settled: it is listed at 100,000 in the shop before a run and 150,000 from black market vendors inside the heist.
  5. A key only works if it's in your character inventory or backpack before you enter, so buy and pack it first.

Keys in Egg Heist open locked doors and areas, and those rooms are where the good stuff is: rare loot boxes, chests and egg nests. If you came to Egg Heist for eggs, keys aren't optional extras. They're how you reach most of the eggs.

There are several colours and each one belongs to a difficulty. Blue keys open the two locked rooms on every map. Silver keys handle Intermediate and Hard doors. Gold, also called Gilded, is for Nightmare. Get the colour wrong, or leave the key in storage, and the door stays shut.

This guide covers which key opens what, what a Gilded Key costs, and every way to get keys into a run.

Why the eggs in Egg Heist sit behind locked doors

In Egg Heist, teams compete to dig rare eggs out of nests inside the sanctum ruins. The nests sit at fixed spawn positions, and only in certain room types, such as large rooms and locked key rooms. A position isn't guaranteed to hold an egg. Each one has a chance, and the higher-chance positions are more likely to have one.

The locked rooms are what make keys worth buying. A locked key room can hold eggs, including rare chests and egg nests, and locked rooms always contain chests, with the loot depending on how rare the room is. Chest contents and item quality have their own guide on this site; here, all you need to know is that a locked room never pays out nothing.

This matters most in a Chaos run. There, almost no eggs lie in the open, so you find them essentially only in the locked key rooms. Go into Chaos without keys and you'll mostly be watching other teams open doors.

Blue, silver and gold: which key opens which door

Blue keys are the ones you use on every run. Each Egg Heist map has two locked rooms, and both doors need a blue key.

Silver keys come in on the harder settings. You need them for certain doors and gates on Hard difficulty, and they open Intermediate and Hard locked doors in general.

Gold keys, called Gilded Keys, are for Nightmare. Locked doors on Nightmare difficulty Egg Heist need one. Bringing one or two Gilded Keys into each run is the usual recommendation, which tells you how often you'll run into those doors.

The Sanctum works by the same rule. Its difficulty tiers and key rooms are unlocked with keys such as rusted keys, and Nightmare key rooms there need a legendary key. Sealed reward rooms in the Sanctum need a matching Sanctum key, which you can buy in the Egg Heist shop. The difficulty tiers themselves, Chaos Mode included, have their own article on this site.

Two

Blue key rooms per map

Each Egg Heist map has two locked rooms behind blue key doors, and in a Chaos run the locked key rooms are essentially the only place eggs are found.

What a Gilded Key costs

The Gilded Key price is not settled. In the shop before an Egg Heist run it is listed at 100,000. From black market vendors inside an Egg Heist it is listed at 150,000.

The practical upshot is simple. Inside the heist you pay the higher figure for convenience. If you're planning a Nightmare run, buy your one or two Gilded Keys in the shop beforehand and keep the in-dungeon vendor for emergencies.

In the shop, golden heist keys sit under the Equip section, not with the general goods.

Where to buy keys and how to bring them into a run

There are five ways to get Egg Heist door keys, blue keys included:

Bring them from your inventory if you already have some.

Buy them before a run from the Egg Heist vendor's shop.

Buy them before a run from the black market dealer.

Buy them inside the dungeon from the NPC trader near the portal or side entrance.

Find them in dungeon loot boxes.

The catch is the inventory rule. A key only works if it's in your character inventory or backpack before you enter Egg Heist. A key left in storage does nothing for you once the run has started, so check your backpack before you queue. Buying inside the dungeon and finding keys in loot boxes cover you when you've forgotten, but neither is something to plan around, especially for Gilded Keys at the higher price.

Buying keys before a run or inside one

Before the run

  • Sold by the Egg Heist vendor's shop or the black market dealer
  • Golden heist keys sit under the shop's Equip section
  • Gilded Key price is unsettled. One figure given is 100,000 in the shop
  • Keys must be in inventory or backpack before entering

Inside the dungeon

  • Sold by an NPC trader near the portal or side entrance
  • Gilded Key price is unsettled. One figure given is 150,000 from black market vendors
  • Keys can also turn up in dungeon loot boxes

Where to start

Before every run, put a blue key in your backpack for the two locked rooms. Add silver keys for Intermediate or Hard, and one or two Gilded Keys for Nightmare, bought in the shop's Equip section at the lower price. In Chaos, keys are close to the only way you'll find eggs at all.
