Evolution traps: Umbral form loss and failed requirements

Evolving or changing form wipes an Umbral look for good. Inferlupa also needs Unbroken Flameruff Spirits, and Infergon only comes from a Perfect-quality pre-evolution.

The short version

  1. Evolving an Umbral Aniimo permanently removes its dark Umbral appearance, its Umbral state and its special perks, and the evolved form does not keep any of it.
  2. Changing an Umbral Aniimo's form, including to a Prismana or weather form, also removes the Umbral appearance permanently.
  3. Only the basic orange Flameruff can evolve into Inferlupa, and it needs Unbroken Flameruff Spirits. Finishing The Warrior quest alone is not enough, and Flux Crystals cannot replace the Spirits.
  4. Infergon only evolves from a Perfect-quality pre-evolution. Evolved Aniimo keep the quality tier of the base form, so check quality before you evolve.
  5. Defeat requirements need defeats. Capturing the target, such as wild Wisptis, does not count.

Most evolution mistakes in Aniimo cost you time. A few cost you something you cannot get back. The worst of them involves Umbral Aniimo, whose dark look disappears the moment they evolve or change form, and nothing brings it back.

The rest are requirements that look met and are not. Inferlupa evolution trips up players who finish a quest and expect a result. Infergon refuses anything below Perfect quality. Defeat counters ignore captures. None of these break your save, but each one can send you back to farm something you thought you already had.

How evolution works in general has its own guide on this site. This page covers the traps.

Evolving an Umbral Aniimo removes the Umbral form for good

An Umbral Aniimo stands out because of its dark appearance. Evolve it and that appearance is gone permanently. So is the Umbral state itself, along with the special perks that come with it. The new form does not inherit any of it.

The game does try to stop you. Before an Umbral Aniimo evolves, a confirmation warning tells you its appearance will be lost, and the evolution only goes ahead once you accept. That warning is the last point where the decision is still yours. If you are mashing through menus on autopilot, slow down when it appears.

The practical rule is simple. Decide whether you want the Umbral or the evolution before you start, because you cannot have both on the same creature.

Form changes count too, including Prismana and weather forms

Evolution is not the only way to lose an Umbral look. Changing an Umbral Aniimo's form does the same thing, and that includes switching it to a Prismana form or a weather form. The loss is just as permanent as with evolution.

This catches players who think of a form change as cosmetic and reversible. With an Umbral it is neither. Once the form changes, the Umbral appearance is gone.

If you want to make an Umbral look more special rather than replace it, the tool is the Sparkling Cube. Sparkling Cubes can turn Umbra forms Sparkling, and players commonly hold on to them for exactly that purpose. Spending them elsewhere and then finding an Umbral you love is a common regret.

Inferlupa evolution: what it actually needs

Inferlupa
Inferlupa

Inferlupa is where the misread requirements pile up, and it has a dedicated guide on this site. The short version follows.

Start with the right Flameruff. Only the basic orange form can evolve into Inferlupa. Regional variants such as Highland and Mountainwoods cannot, however much you level them.

Then the material. Inferlupa's evolution requires Unbroken Flameruff Spirits. Finishing The Warrior quest on its own does not evolve Flameruff, and Flux Crystals cannot stand in for the Spirits. If you have the quest done and the evolution still is not happening, the Spirits are the first thing to check.

The Warrior quest is also time-gated. It needs two real-world days of waiting to complete, so it is worth starting early rather than discovering the wait when you are ready to evolve.

Inferlupa evolves only from the basic orange Flameruff and needs Unbroken Flameruff Spirits.

Real world days for The Warrior quest

The quest is time gated, and finishing it alone still does not evolve Inferlupa without Unbroken Flameruff Spirits.

Infergon and the quality you cannot fix later

Infergon
Infergon

Infergon has a quality gate. Only a Perfect-quality pre-evolution can evolve into it. Good is not enough, and neither is Elite.

Quality matters beyond Infergon as well. An evolved Aniimo keeps the quality tier of the base form you used. Evolving does not upgrade it. So check quality before you evolve anything you plan to keep, not after, because the evolved creature carries whatever tier you started with.

Defeat requirements mean defeats, not captures

Some evolutions ask you to defeat a number of a specific Aniimo. Capturing that Aniimo does not count toward the requirement. If the target is wild Wisptis, catching them leaves the counter where it was; you have to defeat them.

This is an easy one to lose an evening to, because capturing feels like beating something. For a defeat requirement it is not the same thing, so switch from catching to fighting until the count is done.

Where to start

Treat any Umbral as final in its current form. Evolve it or change its form only if you are happy to lose the look, and save Sparkling Cubes for the Umbrals you keep. For Inferlupa, use a basic orange Flameruff, get Unbroken Flameruff Spirits and start The Warrior quest early. For Infergon, only a Perfect-quality pre-evolution will do. When a requirement says defeat, fight the target instead of catching it.
