How Tumbler Pods and wild surges work

A Tumbler holds up to 10 Aniimo in one throw. Here is where to buy them cheapest, how to start a surge, and why defeating surge spawns wastes it.

The short version

  1. A Tumbler Anipod captures several clustered wild Aniimo in one throw, holding up to 10 in a single use during group events.
  2. Tumbler pods have a base 2x capture rate multiplier, and Tumbler Oni Pods reach a 6x multiplier during gather events.
  3. The Mysterious Vendor sells five Tumblers for 80,000 currency, which is cheaper than Outpost Guardian Joff at 200,000 each.
  4. Nurturing a bloom with Vein Essence starts a Wild Surge of about 20 local Aniimo, and the quality of the items you offer no longer changes how good the surge is.
  5. Capture surge spawns rather than defeating them, because defeated ones add no Vein Essence or Prismana progress.

Wild Surges put a crowd of Aniimo in one place, and the Tumbler is the pod built for crowds. Used together, they let you catch a group in one throw instead of chasing creatures one at a time.

This guide covers what a Tumbler actually does in a surge, where to get them without wasting currency, how to start a surge, and the one mistake that throws a surge's progress away.

What a Tumbler does in a crowd

The Tumbler Anipod goes by a few names: Tumbler Pod, or spirit cloud. Whatever you call it, its job is the same. You throw it into a cluster of wild Aniimo and it captures several of them at once, holding up to 10 in a single use during group events.

A standard Tumbler gives a base 2x capture rate multiplier. The Tumbler Oni Pod is stronger in specific situations and reaches a 6x multiplier during gather events, which is exactly when a surge farmer is throwing. Pod tiers and crafting have their own guide on this site; for surges, the short version is that the Oni version is the one to save for gatherings.

You can push the odds further before you throw. Deplete the targets' Break gauge to stun them, and the capture chance goes up. In a tight group, that means softening the cluster first and then committing the pod.

Draining each target's Break gauge before the throw raises the capture chance further.

Where to get Tumblers

You do not have to buy every Tumbler. They come free through ordinary play: the battle pass, quests, exploration, chests and training all hand them out. They are also a possible Lightweave pull, listed at a 3.38% rate in the Forest of Butterfly Dreams draw, so treat any you get there as a bonus rather than a supply line.

When you do buy, the vendor matters. Outpost vendors sell Tumblers, and Outpost Guardian Joff (whose name you will also see as Joph, or Jeff) charges 200,000 currency each. The Mysterious Vendor sells five Tumblers for 80,000 currency, which is cheaper than Joff. The catch is that the Mysterious Vendor only stocks them occasionally, so buy when you see the offer and use Joff as the fallback.

Starting a Wild Surge

Surges come from blooms. Interacting with a bloom lets you nurture it and spawn Aniimo specific to that area. Nurturing a bloom on a tree or a convergence point with Vein Essence triggers outbreaks and Wild Surges, pulling a circle of about 20 wild Aniimo native to that region around the spot for you to capture. Activating a Nurture Session at a regional branch does the same job: it triggers a Wild Surge and draws local wild Aniimo to gather around the bloom.

Two things are worth knowing before you spend anything. First, the quality of the items you offer during nurturing no longer decides the quality of the surge, so higher-tier offerings do not buy you a better one. Second, if you want a surge of one particular Aniimo, you need that creature's shard or crystal. Choosing which Aniimo a bloom spawns is covered in its own article.

A surge of about 20 clustered creatures is the situation the Tumbler exists for. Stun a group, throw, and repeat across the circle.

Wild Aniimo drawn to a surge, roughly

Nurturing a bloom with Vein Essence circles about this many regional Aniimo, so bring enough Tumblers for the crowd.

Capture, never defeat

This is the rule that costs players the most. Aniimo spawned by nurturing or a Wild Surge must be captured. Defeating them adds no Vein Essence and no progress toward the zone's Prismana, so every one you knock out is simply gone.

Catching every target Aniimo in a zone's surge releases Prismatic Energy there, which unlocks the option to release it by interacting with the zone's flower. Missing even one target means that option stays locked. The full Prismana process has its own guide on this site.

There is also a reason to watch each surge closely: Wild Surges started through ecosystem nurturing have a chance to spawn rare Umbra Aniimo.

Weather and friends

Blooms are not the only source of crowds. Inclement weather such as rain, snow and thunderstorms triggers rare Aniimo spawns and outbreaks, so a storm is a good time to have Tumblers in your bag.

Your main world is a private instance, and you can invite friends into it to explore and catch creatures cooperatively. For a surge farmer, that means you can run your blooms with company rather than alone.

Where to start

Collect free Tumblers from quests, chests and the battle pass. Buy the Mysterious Vendor's bundle of five whenever it shows up, and only pay Joff's price when you have to. Save Oni Pods for gather events, stun clusters before you throw, and capture every surge spawn instead of defeating it.
