How to unlock RV expeditions and upgrade the RV

Expeditions sit behind two unlocks and a chain of RV upgrades. Here is what opens the Homeland at Wayfarer level 20, and where the second trip tier comes from at RV level 11.

The short version

  1. The Homeland system unlocks at Wayfarer level 20, which is your player level, not an Aniimo's level.
  2. Your personal RV home comes from GoGo Homes, an early-game mission you pick up from Fanny.
  3. RV upgrades run on real-time timers, such as two hours to unlock the construction zone, so start them early and let them tick.
  4. Upgrading the RV, including its rooftop loft, is what gives you more dispatch slots for sending Aniimo on expeditions.
  5. Upgrading the signal transmitter at RV level 11 unlocks the second trip tier.

You don't start Aniimo with expeditions. Before you can send a single Aniimo on a trip, you need a home to send it from, and that home has to grow before it can send more than a few.

The path has three parts: two unlocks that give you the Homeland and the RV, a run of upgrades paid for in materials and waiting time, and the extra dispatch slots and trip tiers those upgrades open. The Homeland has a few extras along the way that are worth knowing about while you wait on a timer.

The two unlocks: Wayfarer level 20 and GoGo Homes

The Homeland system unlocks at Wayfarer level 20. Wayfarer level is your player level, so this is about how far you have progressed, not about any one Aniimo.

The RV itself comes from a mission. GoGo Homes is an early-game NPC mission from Fanny, and completing it unlocks your personal RV home. If you are looking for the RV and can't find it, check whether you have done that mission.

The Homeland is your private space for farming the resources and currencies that feed back into building and upgrading the RV. That loop has its own guide on this site, so the short version is all you need here: what you gather at home pays for the RV, and the RV is what eventually sends Aniimo out.

The Homeland system unlocks at Wayfarer level 20, your player level, so RV progress waits until you reach it.

Upgrading the RV: materials, toolkits and timers

RV upgrades cost materials you harvest in the Homeland, including wood and minerals. The same materials also go into decorating the RV, so spending them on looks slows down your upgrades.

Many component upgrades also need modification toolkits, and that includes installing module upgrades on the RV. Keep some in reserve, because running out stalls an upgrade you already have the wood and minerals for.

One trap catches people early. Accurate material counts for RV upgrades only show while you are inside the Homeland. From outside, they display as zero. If an upgrade looks unaffordable while you are out in the world, go home and check again before you start farming.

Upgrades also take real time. Unlocking the construction zone, for example, comes with a two hour wait. You can't rush that, which is the real reason to start Homeland activities early: the clock only runs once you have started it. Each upgrade also raises the Homeland's passive resource generation and scaling, so earlier upgrades pay for later ones.

More dispatch slots and the second trip tier

Expeditions grow with the RV. Upgrading it, including its rooftop loft, unlocks additional dispatch slots, which means more Aniimo out on trips at once.

Trip tiers work separately. At RV level 11 you can upgrade the signal transmitter, and that unlocks the second trip tier. So the RV level you are aiming for is 11. Get there, upgrade the transmitter, and the next tier of expeditions opens.

At RV level 11 the signal transmitter can be upgraded, which unlocks the second trip tier for expeditions.

Homeland extras while you wait

Some outfits and cosmetics can only be had through the Homeland and the RV. Four free outfits come from main story completion and Homeland gathering tasks, so the gathering you do for RV materials also counts toward clothes.

You can place and use egg incubators and Hatchinators at your homestead, so hatching can run at home next to everything else. Some interactive furniture can also be placed and used directly in the open world, not just inside your plot.

The Homeland is social too. You can invite friends into your world and visit each other's Homelands, and co-op invites let you enter other players' home plots. If you like someone's setup, housing and furniture group layouts can be shared with layout codes.

Where to start

Reach Wayfarer level 20 and finish Fanny's GoGo Homes mission. After that, keep the RV upgrading without a break: farm wood and minerals at home, keep modification toolkits on hand, and check material counts from inside the Homeland. Every upgrade adds dispatch slots, and RV level 11 is where the signal transmitter opens the second trip tier.
