Emberpup Evolution Line: Flameruff, Scorchhowl and Inferlupa

The first creature you see is also one of the best things you can invest in early. Here is where to find a good one, why Hustle beats your mount, and why the Inferlupa questline should be running from day one.

The short version

  • An Emberpup spawns to the right of the player on entering the world, but the one you are given has poor stats.
  • Nimbus Fields is farmable right after you start, so you can catch a replacement immediately. Emberpup also spawns in the Sea of Flowers and Brightbough Plateau.
  • Hustle is Emberpup's mobility skill, and it is faster than mounts and other rapid creatures, including the hoverboard.
  • Flameruff and Scorchhowl can launch fireballs to burn distant obstacles and reach chests.
  • Inferlupa is a branching evolution, and its questline takes three real-world days to complete.

Walk into the world and look right. One Emberpup is standing there. That placement makes it the first creature most players will ever see, which is convenient, because it is also one you should actually want.

The line is a strong early-game priority. It gives you fire damage, ranged utility that opens chests, and the fastest traversal skill you will have access to at the start. The catch is that the specific Emberpup the game hands you has poor stats, and the best evolution in the line is locked behind a real-world clock.

Both problems have the same fix: start early, and go catch your own.

Where Emberpup spawns

Emberpup is not limited to the starting area. It spawns in Nimbus Fields, in the Sea of Flowers, and in Brightbough Plateau, so if you miss the first one or want more, there are several places to go back to.

Nimbus Fields is the useful one early. It spawns there and can be farmed there right after you start the game, which means you can build up a stock before you have done much else.

A fire element damage dealer that spawns to your right as you enter the world, and can be farmed in Nimbus Fields, the Sea of Flowers and Brightbough Plateau.

The one you are handed has poor stats

The Emberpup provided to players at the beginning of the game has poor stats. That is the whole catch. The line is worth investing in, but the specific creature the game gives you is not the specimen to pour resources into.

So treat the free one as a demo. Go to Nimbus Fields, farm your own, and pick from what you catch. The Emberpup evolution line is recommended as a strong early-game priority, and getting that right in the first hour costs you almost nothing compared to correcting it later.

Hustle outruns your mount

Emberpup's mobility skill is named Hustle. It is a traversal ability that moves you across the map rapidly, and the comparison that matters is this: Emberpup moves faster than mounts and faster than other rapid creatures, including the hoverboard.

That means your travel answer and your early damage answer are the same creature. You are not choosing between speed and a fighting slot. Every trip between regions is faster because you kept it.

Fire that opens chests

Emberpup is a fire-element damage dealer, and its kit rewards playing forward rather than backing off. Fire Kick inflicts increased damage when performed following a successful dodge, so dodging into an attack is worth more than dodging away from one. Fire Bolt covers range and inflicts fire status.

The line's utility shows up once it evolves. Flameruff and Scorchhowl can launch fireballs to burn distant obstacles and access chests. Some exploration loot is gated behind having a creature that can do this, and this line is the one you already have.

The branch, and the three days to Inferlupa

Emberpup does not evolve along a single track. The line includes Flameruff and Scorchhowl, and it branches, with one path leading to Inferlupa.

Inferlupa is the one to plan around, because acquiring it is not a matter of levels. It requires completing a questline that takes three real-world days. The sooner you open that questline, the sooner it finishes. Starting it late is the one mistake here that no amount of play time will fix faster.

The Emberpup line
  1. EmberpupFire element damage dealer. Provides the Hustle traversal ability for rapid movement across the map.
  2. FlameruffCan launch fireballs to burn distant obstacles and reach chests.
  3. ScorchhowlAlso launches fireballs to burn distant obstacles and open up chests.
  4. InferlupaThe branching evolution. Requires completing a questline that takes three real world days.

Where to start

Start the line on day one. Catch a replacement for your free Emberpup in Nimbus Fields, keep Hustle for travel, and open the Inferlupa questline as early as you can so the three-day clock is running while you do everything else.
