The short version

  1. Scorchhowl is a Fire-element DPS with a kit centered on aggressive fire damage.
  2. A successful dodge with Fire Kick increases Scorchhowl's damage by 20% for 20 seconds.
  3. Burn Breaker, once fully charged, consumes all remaining EP for bonus damage scaled to the amount consumed.
  4. The recommended skill setup is Fire Kick and Burn Breaker; the ultimate is Falling Star.
  5. Fire Bolt ignites flammable objects in the world and is the standard way to reach chests that are otherwise closed off.
  6. Thunderstorm Form is a Fire/Lightning variant with Lightning attacks the base Fire form does not have.

Scorchhowl is a Fire-element creature and it fills the DPS role. Its kit is centered on aggressive fire damage, and the way you play it follows from that: you are there to hit things, and most of your decisions are about how to hit them harder.

Two skills do the heavy lifting, and one of them rewards you for dodging rather than for standing still. Get that part right and the rest of the kit falls into place.

The overworld half matters too. Scorchhowl carries a skill you will use outside combat more than in it, and it opens chests you cannot otherwise reach.

Scorchhowl is a Fire element creature that fills the DPS role, with a kit centered on aggressive fire damage.

Where Scorchhowl fits in a team

Scorchhowl is a Fire-element creature in Aniimo and it occupies the DPS role. Nothing in the kit is subtle about that. It is built around aggressive fire damage, so you bring it to be the thing that puts damage out, and you make your skill choices accordingly.

That framing is useful because it tells you what to ignore. When you are weighing two options on Scorchhowl, the question is always which one ends up doing more damage in the window you have.

Fire Kick, Burn Breaker and Falling Star

The recommended skill setup uses Fire Kick and Burn Breaker. Those are the two you plan around.

One of Scorchhowl's abilities has a dodge built into it, and Fire Kick is the one that pays you for using it. A successful dodge with Fire Kick increases Scorchhowl's damage by 20% for 20 seconds. This is the single most important thing to know about the creature: your damage buff is not something you press, it is something you earn by reading an incoming attack correctly.

Burn Breaker is the payoff skill. It is a chargeable attack, and once it is fully charged it consumes all of Scorchhowl's remaining EP to deal bonus damage scaled to the amount consumed. The bonus comes from the full charge, so a rushed, partial Burn Breaker is not the same skill. The more EP you still have when it goes off, the more it hurts.

The ultimate is Falling Star.

Building the rotation around the dodge

The order follows from how the two skills work. Fire Kick's dodge is what opens the window, so a good rotation starts with an attack you can dodge through rather than with your biggest hit. Twenty seconds is a comfortable stretch of a fight, and the buff raises Scorchhowl's damage rather than any one skill, so everything you land inside it benefits.

Burn Breaker belongs at the other end. It empties your EP bar by design, and the bonus is bigger the fuller that bar is, so you charge it when you have resources to spend and not because it happens to be available. Landing a fully charged Burn Breaker inside the twenty seconds Fire Kick bought you is the whole point of playing Scorchhowl well.

The practical failure case is obvious once you know to look for it. Dodge badly and you have no buff. Fire Burn Breaker early and you have no EP left to make it count.

20%

Damage increase after a successful Fire Kick dodge

A successful dodge with Fire Kick raises Scorchhowl's damage by 20% for 20 seconds, so the rotation is built to land it.

Fire Bolt is the skill you keep for the overworld

Fire Bolt is a ranged fireball that both Flameruff and Scorchhowl learn. It ignites flammable objects in the world, and that is what it is really for: it is the standard way players reach chests that are otherwise inaccessible. If you see something blocked off and burnable, this is the answer.

It sits slightly awkwardly against the combat advice above, since the recommended setup is Fire Kick and Burn Breaker. Treat Fire Bolt as exploration equipment rather than part of your damage plan, and swap for it when you are out looking for chests instead of fighting.

Thunderstorm Form and Prismana Scorchhowl

Scorchhowl has a Thunderstorm Form, a Fire/Lightning variant with lightning-based attacks. It adds the Lightning element alongside Fire and gives Scorchhowl access to Lightning attacks that the base Fire form simply does not have, which is a genuine change to what the creature can do rather than a coat of paint. Scorchhowl's Lightning and Earth skills each carry a 15-second cooldown, so those are slower, spaced-out buttons compared with the Fire rotation you build around Fire Kick.

Scorch Hollow possesses a Prismana form. Prismana Scorchhowl does not possess an exclusive typing or an exclusive skill, so it brings nothing new to the rotation above. How these variants are obtained is the subject of the alternate forms guide on this site; for combat purposes, Thunderstorm Form is the one that changes your options.

Thunderstorm Form and Prismana Scorchhowl

Thunderstorm Form

  • A Fire/Lightning variant of Scorchhowl.
  • Adds the Lightning element alongside Fire.
  • Grants Lightning based attacks the base Fire form does not have.

Prismana Scorchhowl

  • Scorch Hollow possesses a Prismana form.
  • No exclusive typing.
  • No exclusive skill.

Where to start

Run Fire Kick and Burn Breaker, dodge on purpose to open the 20 second window, and save the fully charged Burn Breaker for when your EP bar is worth spending. Keep Fire Bolt on hand for chest hunting, and take Thunderstorm Form if you want Lightning attacks alongside the Fire ones.
